Mead and Cooley suggest that we see ourselves as we imagine others see us. Test the proposition that self is inseparable from society by imagining or actually carrying out a shift in the way that you ordinarily relate to other people. Identify various characteristics of your personality that you would like to change and do so. Do people react differently to you? Do you feel differently about yourself? How possible is it to change your definition of self as a young adult?

During the next three television shows that you watch, pay attention to the different values, attitudes, and behaviours portrayed during the commercials. To what extent do they reflect the way you think about various issues and yourself? Notice if commercials equate a human emotion with a product. Keep a list of the products advertised and how they were promoted. How important do you think advertising is in socializing adults? Children? Teenagers?

Interview a parent who has more than one child. Find out when the parent first knew that the children's personalities were different. To what extent do they attribute the differences to biological or socialization characteristics? Which of the models of personality development (Freud, Piaget, Kohlberg, Gilligan or Mead) or which combination of them best suits the parental explanation for differences in their children?

According to Goffman, the regimentation of prisons and mental institutions makes them different from other institutions, and he refers to them as total institutions. Their goal is resocialization, a radical altering of an inmate's personality. Think of your life in university or college. To what extent is it similar to a total institution? Think of the rules, regulations and goals of the institution. How have they changed the way you behave and the way you perceive yourself?
